Rooted in place. Guided by stewardship.
The Mugu Collective was created from a simple belief: small, intentional actions can create meaningful change.
California’s landscapes are distinct. Designing with plants that belong here supports biodiversity, strengthens water resilience, and reconnects neighborhoods to the ecosystems that sustain them. When individual homeowners choose to steward even a small portion of their land differently, those efforts accumulate into collective impact.
Founder
The Mugu Collective is led by Josh Anderson, a Certified California Native Plant Landscaper committed to thoughtful, place-based design.
With a long-standing interest in land stewardship, water-conscious planting, and climate responsibility, Josh approaches each project with long-term perspective. The focus is on establishing landscapes that mature naturally over time.
The design studio remains intentionally small in scope, serving homeowners in Santa Barbara and surrounding areas who value ecological integrity and practical design guidance.
Design Approach
Every site is different. Sun patterns, soil conditions, and homeowner goals all inform the design process.
The Mugu Collective emphasizes:
Native plant communities suited to local conditions
Manageable project sizes
Long-term establishment over instant impact
Practical guidance for successful implementation
A Broader Commitment
The Mugu Collective represents an evolving commitment to individual climate responsibility, land stewardship, and community education.
Residential landscape projects build awareness at the neighborhood scale. Over time, connecting to a broader network of native habitat, regenerative practices, and land-based education resources throughout the region.
